FAQs
Q: What should I expect before we start my session? A: Your massage therapy session is designed to be a relaxing and therapeutic experience. We'll begin with a quick chat to discuss your health history, any specific areas of concern or discomfort and your desired goals for our session. Be sure to mention any injuries, surgeries, or allergies. This is also a great opportunity to communicate any other needs to me.
Q: Should I undress all the way? A: Your comfort is of upmost importance. You can undress to whatever degree you feel most comfortable. For me to provide the most effective massage, it's ideal to remove all of your clothing. However, you may choose to leave your bottom undergarments on. You will be fully draped with sheets during the session, ensuring your privacy and warmth. I ask that you remove necklaces and bracelets; earrings and rings are okay to leave on.
Q: What should I expect during the massage? A: I'll use various massage techniques, such as kneading, gliding, and apply pressure, to address your body's specific needs. The table is fully adjustable, so we can adjust it to accommodate any needs. The room is set to create a relaxing atmosphere, with dimmable lighting and spa music is optional. Please communicate throughout the session if you have concerns or need adjustments.
Q: Can I pick the music? A: Yes! Typically, I play calming meditation music, but if you have a preferred playlist on Spotify, we can certainly to use it.
Q: Does getting a massage hurt? A: While massage therapy is generally a relaxing experience, every body is different. It's important to understand that depending on your tension levels, discomfort it possible, especially when addressing areas of significant tension or muscle knots. We often refer to this in the massage world as "therapeutic discomfort" or "good pain." We can always increase or decrease pressure to your comfort level and I will check in when switching to different areas of the body.
Q: What is the difference between "therapeutic discomfort" and "genuine pain"? How do I know? A: There's a clear difference between these two. Your comfort is my priority. If you're unsure whether you are experiencing "good" vs. "genuine" pain, let's talk through the sensation. We can adjust techniques while still ensuring we address your problem areas in a comfortable and safe way. Therapeutic discomfort: When I work on bodies with tight muscles or knots, clients may experience some pressure or a sensation that's slightly uncomfortable - especially first-time clients, as it's an unfamiliar sensation. It's often described as a "good pain" - a feeling of release as the tension is worked out of your body. This sensation usually subsides quickly and is followed by a feeling of relief. Massaging these knots can release toxins that have built up in the muscle, causing mild discomfort. Some clients find they are even sore for 1-2 days after. You can think of it as a post-gym-soreness after a good workout. Genuine pain: Sharp, intense pain, or pain that radiates or lingers, is not normal. If you experience this type of pain at any point during our session, please speak up immediately.
Q: What should I expect after my session ends? A: After the massage, I'll offer any personalized recommendations for self-care, such as stretches or exercises. You'll have time to redress in private. It's recommended to drink plenty of water after your massage to help minimize post-massage soreness.
Q: What session length should I choose? 60 minutes, 90 minutes, or 120 minutes? A: The ideal session length depends on your needs and the areas you'd like addressed. We can discuss your needs together before your first session. Here's a general guideline. 60 Minutes: Ideal for targeted work on specific areas of tension or a general, full-body relaxation massage. It's good for maintenance and quick stress relief. Suitable for those with limited schedules or who are new to massage therapy. 90 Minutes (My recommendation for new clients): Allows for more in-depth work on multiple areas of the body. Provides a more comprehensive relaxation experience. Beneficial for addressing chronic tension or pain in several areas. 120 Minutes: Offers the most thorough and indulgent massage experience. Allows for extensive work on all areas of the body and deep relaxation. Recommended for those with significant muscle tension, chronic pain, or who desire a very deep, therapeutic session. Allows for very focused work on multiple problem areas.
Q: How often should I get a massage? A: The ideal frequency of your sessions depends on your individual needs and goals. We can discuss a personalized plan to determine your best fit, but this a general guideline to get you started. Stress Relief & General Relaxation: Monthly or Bi-monthly. Chronic Pain & Muscle Tension: Weekly or bi-weekly initially, then tapering to monthly maintenance. Injury Recovery: As recommended by your doctor or massage therapist, often multiple times a week in the initial stages. Maintenance & Wellness: Monthly or as needed.
Q: When should I not get a massage? A: If you are feeling unwell or have any contagious illnesses, please reschedule your session. Any injuries, burns, bruises or cuts do not prevent you from receiving a massage, and can be worked around. For certain medical or clinical conditions, doctor approval may be necessary or highly recommended.
Q: What kind of oils or lotions do you use? A: I use hypoallergenic, unscented and cruelty-free massage gel. I have a few types of essential oils: lavender, peppermint, and eucalyptus are the most common that I use. If you have a preferred scent or type of medium you'd like, please feel free to bring it.
Q: Are there any medical conditions that prevent me from getting a massage? A: Some medical conditions may require modifications or prevent massage therapy altogether. These include, but are not limited to: -acute inflammation or infections -3 days post-chemo or radiation therapy -blood clots or Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) -recent surgeries or fractures
Q: How do I pay? A: Nothing will be charged until after the appointment. Fresha requires a card to book your appointment, but you do not owe anything until your session. You can also feel free to use a different payment method (another card, cash, Venmo or Zelle) at the time of service. While not mandatory or expected, tipping is highly appreciated. The amount is entirely at your discretion and based on your satisfaction with the massage session. You can add the tip as apart of your payment method or separately.
